The root cause of Israel’s decline was that the covenant relationship with the Lord, with its requirement of absolute and loyal obedience to His commands, was broken" (Encyclopedia of the Bible). Jesus continues to confirm his authority by miracles and confirms the message of John the Baptist in Luke 7.
